There are a number of websites that show the past sales of domain names. You can learn how the pricing goes, and just how much the largest sales are in each market. Sometimes the asking prices might surprise you but historically, the better domains have commanded significant prices - and rightly so. They have natural traffic, command respect, are the strongest for branding, and they represent the leader in a market. Some sites that show prices include DnJournal.com, and NameBio.com.
Across the world, over 90% of the largest brands all use a .com domain for the main identity. It might be tempting to use some other kind of domain (they are called TLD's) but .Com has proven, time and time again, that it commands not only the most respect, but has the highest rate of user-recall when used in advertising. What this means is that someone who advertises, such as on TV, a domain ending in .co or .club or .anything-else, will see that some of their traffic ends up going to the .com equivalent. There are 100's of new TLD's now, yet .com is still King. You cannot go wrong with .com domains - why take a chance?
